Health

Besides sunscreen and your personal first-aid kit we recommend medicine for diarrhoea due to the climatic change. A valid yellow fever immunisation is demanded for all travellers older than 1 year who enter Botswana from a country infected with yellow fever. It is not necessary when arriving from Germany. The Department of Foreign Affairs also recommends immunisation against tetanus, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis A, when staying for more than 4 weeks or special exposure also against hepatits B, rabies, meningocossus (quadruple serum) and typhus. Please consult your doctor, also with regard to malaria prophylaxis. An insect repellent, e.g. Nobite or Antibrumm, should be part of your luggage.
In the whole country you have to deal with serious shortage in medical and medicinal supply. We therefore suggest you invest in a travel health insurance, and will be happy to inform you about it.

Currency

The local currency is the Pula, but often you can also pay with US $. There are cash machines in nearly every bigger city of the country. At several machines you will receive cash with your VISA card plus PIN. Credit cards (especially VISA and Mastercard, rarely Amex) are largely accepted. Traveller's cheques should be issued in Euro or US Dollar. At some cash machines (Stanbic Bank) you may also receive cash you're your EC card. During winter's nights it may become touchily cold, during this time frost is possible within the whole country and differences in temperatures of over 20° C between day and night are normal. Nearly solely in the months from December till March it may rain, but the borderline from dry and rainy season isn't as clearly defined in Botswana as in many other countries.
