TIPS BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE

Entry

With effect from 01st July 2015, Visas can be applied for online before arrival to Kenya www.ecitizen.go.ke. Visitors can still get their visas on arrival at the Airports for the first two months i.e. up to end of August 2015. During this period, one will have the option to either apply online or get their visa on arrival. The email approval after application and payment will take about seven days hence visitors coming to Kenya w.e.f. 01st September 2015 will need to lodge their Visa application well in advance. Any guest with booking for travel before 01st September needs to take into account the seven day time lag between the application and the approval (whether to apply online or on arrival). For arrivals after 01st September 2015, if there is no change to the policy all Visas MUST be applied online.

Health

Besides sunscreen and your personal first-aid kit we recommend medicine for diarrhoea due to the climatic change. At the moment, no immunisation is required. It is recommended to take malaria-and typhus prophylaxis. Please consult your doctor. An insect repellent, e.g. Autan, should be part of your luggage. There are several hospitals in Mombasa and Nairobi with European standards. Due to the fact that there is no national insurance agreement with Kenya, medical costs are often not cared for. We therefore suggest you invest in a travel health insurance, and will be happy to inform you about it.

Currency

The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling.

Time shift

The time shift is two hours in winter and one hour in summer.

Climate

Mombasa has a tropical coastal climate and is an all-year destination. From November till mid-April it is normally dry. But in May the rainy season with rain showers begins which may continue until June. But even then normally there is no continuous rain and the temperatures at noon are around 30 degrees. The months June till October offer the most comfortable temperatures for the mid-Europeans. In the highland there is a pleasant and balanced climate which may be compared to our temperatures during midsummer. Nairobi is located in the tropical climate zone but offers a very pleasant climate for Europeans due to its altitude. The average annual temperature lies around 19 degrees. The warmest month is March with an average of 20,5 degrees, the coldest one is July with an average of 16,8 degrees. Most of the rain falls in April, least in July.

Luggage / Clothes

Light summer clothes of cotton are recommended. For a safari you should think of comfortable shoes as well as a warm pullover for the evenings. Please also remember to take enough film and photo material as well as binoculars. Sunscreen with high sun protection factor and good sunglasses are an absolute necessary. Please take an extra folding travelling bag for your safari, so that your other luggage can stay at the hotel. In some hotels, amongst them Severin Sea Lodge, men should wear long trousers for dinner.

You help to preserve Kenya's sensitive coral reef by not taking along or buying any sea shells, corals or starfish. Within the whole country it is strictly forbidden to sell animal trophies, furs, teeth or ivory.

HINTS PRIOR TO YOUR DEPARTURE

Entry

Germans, Austrians and Swiss need a passport which has to be valid for at least 6 more months after their departure from Tanzania, a return ticket and a visa. For Germans, the chargeable visa can be acquired in advance at the Tanzanian Embassy in Berlin or - for a non-recurring entry - directly at the airport. The visa for non-recurring entry is valid for a maximum of 3 months on the date of entry. The same visa requirements apply to children. If children are not registered in the passport of their parents, they may enter the country with their own passport.
Embassy of the Republic of Tanzania, Eschenallee 11, D-14050 Berlin (Charlottenburg), Tel.: (030) 303 08 00.

Health

As the hygienic prescriptions differ from country to country it is important that a visitor informs himself about the prescriptions applying for his home country before travelling to Tanzania. Where necessary he should obtain immunisation certificates if these are essential for the return in his home country. The medical care can't be compared to Europe and is often a problem in technical or hygienic ways. However, the "Aga Khan Hospital" in Dar es Salaam offers an excellent care. We strongly recommend an adequate health insurance with return transport insurance which is valid world-wide. Please don't forget to take a first-aid kit with you.
When entering the country directly from Europe, no immunisation is stipulated. In the case of a previous stay in countries with yellow fever according to WHO (during the last 6 days before entry) an effective immunisation certificate for yellow fever is required (not required for children under the age of 1 year or travellers who have not left the transit room, during 12 hours stay, within the infected country).

Currency

The local currency of Tanzania is the "Tanzanian Shilling"(Tsh.). 1 TZS = 100 Cent. There are bank notes worth 10.000, 5.000, 2.000, 1.000 and 500 TZS.

Banks

The National Bank of Commerce and all authorised exchange offices change foreign currencies (US-Dollar and EURO). Partly, foreign currencies can also be changed at the hotels. In the touristic centres you may also pay with US-Dollars. Opening hours are from Mon. - Fri.: 08:30 am- 12.30 pm, partly till 04:00 pm; Sat. 08.00 am - 01:00 pm.

Time difference

The time difference compared to Central European Time is plus 2 hours. During our summer time (end of March till end of October) it is only one hour.

Climate

The temperature fluctuation in Tanzania is minimal. The hottest months are October till February. The high plateau has a moderate climate with hot, dry days and cool nights. At the coast as well as on Zanzibar and the other islands there is a warm humid climate with an average day temperature of about 30° Celsius. The main rainy season occurs during the monsoon period. The long rainy season lasts from March to May, the short rainy season from November to December. Due to the wind, a stay at the coast is the most enjoyable from June to September.

Luggage / Clothes

We recommend light cotton summer clothes. For your safari, please don't forget comfortable shoes as well as a warm pullover for the evenings. Also remember to take enough film and photo material with you as well as binoculars. Sun cream with high sun protection factor and good sunglasses are essential. Please take a preferably soft travelling bag, your additional luggage can stay in your hotel. Maximum 15 kg (33 lbs) pro person.

DAY OF DEPARTURE

Flight

The flight time from Europe depends on the respective flight path but takes about 11 to 14 hours, partly with 1 - 2 hours stopover. Dar es Salaam can be reached from Germany via Amsterdam, London, Dubai, Zurich and Addis Abeba. Direct flights from Germany approach the airports "Kilimanjaro" and "Zanzibar". The private airlines "Precision Air" and "Coastal Aviation" offer multiple domestic flights. Normally, these flights are steady, but you should always ask for changes in the flight schedule. Visitors have to pay an airport tax when leaving the country by air. We will be glad to inform you about prices for Comfort/Business Class. For a fee of 30,- EUR we reserve your preferred seat. On request, we also reserve cheap parking spaces at your airport in advance.

Security advice

Please keep in mind that you should arrive at the check-in counter of your airline at least two hours in advance. We will be glad to send you information on your respective airport. In all cases, please don't put any sharp objects like nail scissors into your hand luggage.

AT YOUR HOLIDAY DESTINATION

Arrival

After having arrived at the airport in Tanzania, you will be welcomed by your tour guide and accompanied to your hotel.

Population

The official languages are English and Kiswahili, a so-called Bantu language with Arabic elements and the most popular and most common language in Africa. However, there are more than 120 other languages within the country, affected by the four different language groups: Khoisan, Kushitish, Nilotish and Bantu.
There are different religions in Tanzania: about 35% of the inhabitants are Muslim (on Zanzibar even nearly 100%), about 35% are Christians due to the proselytization during the 19th century and about 35% are followers of natural religions. The Hindu population is clearly outnumbered. The customs and practices of the Islamic population should be strictly respected, especially concerning clothing.

Safaris/Excursions

We offer you an interesting variety of safaris and excursions. We recommend booking in advance as during the high season many safari lodges and camps are fully booked which would cost you valuable time of your holidays.

Nature

The country's vegetation reaches from vast mangrove forests at the coastal areas to cloud forests at the higher areas. Due to the climatic conditions you will also find wet and dry savannas with the plant cover that is typical for the deserts. The country's fauna offers a great diversity: Besides huge herds of hoofed animals like antelopes and zebras, there are also lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. The rivers are populated by crocodiles and hippos. Additionally there is a great variety of birds. There are lots of reserves and national parks in order to save the big game. Serengeti and Kilimanjaro belong to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Security

It is wise to be as careful in major cities as you would be in any other metropolis. Never leave your luggage unattended in front of the hotel or in the lobby. Deposit your valuables at the hotel safe, don't walk alone through the streets after sunset, always lock your car and keep doors and windows closed.
Please deposit your money, jewellery as well as your documents in the hotel safe, don't carry unnecessary things around and keep an eye on your handbag and camera. After nightfall we recommend to use taxis instead of public transport.

Power supply

The voltage is 230 Volt. Due to fluctuations of current between 150 and 300 Volt, we recommend a voltage regulator for sensible equipment. The power outlets vary a lot in Tanzania, therefore a multi adapter may be useful. The power supply in big and smaller cities normally is ensured, except for the dry seasons where the current entry is often switched off for several hours a day by the biggest waterworks. In any case, power breakdowns are no rarity. Smaller localities which are located far away from the main cities and are therefore not linked to the state-run electric circuit use kerosene lamps or candles in the evenings. You should always take an electronic torch and batteries with your.
