Flora & Fauna

Namibia's diversity in nature and species is indescribable and fascinates the traveller from the first minute. About 70% of Namibia consist of savannahs. Central Namibia is dominated by thornbush savannahs, wide grasslands which are permeated by acacia bushes. Sporadical you see trees, mostly camelthorn trees and other acacias.

Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is a 22.275 km² nature reserve in the north of Namibia and comprises all 5.000 km² of the Etosha Pan. The name "Etosha" comes from the Oshivambo and means something like "big wide place".
Apart from crocodiles, hippos, waterbucks and bufallos, you will find nearly all big animals of Southern Africa.
The vegetation zones of Etosha National Park reach from salt deserts and grasslands to savannahs and dry fields. A botanic speciality is the Sprokieswoud (magic wood) where moringa trees grow in an area of about one square kilometer, which usually only grow on rocky grounds.

Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon is located in Southern Namibia and is the largest canyon in Africa and the second largest in the world (160 km long, 27 km wide, 550 m deep).
The fish river has its source in the Eastern Naukluft mountains, but it only carries water beneath its swell during the rainy seasons. Anyway you will find single pools even in dry times are which probably fed by groundwater during the whole year. The waterholes are visited both by some antelope species and leopards. It is one of the reasons why the Canyon was declared a nature reserve and has party been nationalized, party controlled privately.

The Sossusvlei is a clay pan enclosed by huge sand dunes. Partly, the dunes reach a height of up to 300 m and therefore belong to the highest dunes of the world. Very infrequently and after strong rain falls, the clay pan fills with water and due to the nearly water-impermeable layer of clay, the turquoise lake remains for some time.
Despite the extreme living conditions there are lots of different species which have adapted to the desert of Sossusvlei. Besides mammals like the gemsbok and the goldmuss there are also sand lizards and puffadder. You will find lots of camelthorn trees along the water veins.

Namib-Skeleton Coast National Park

The Namib-Skeleton Coast National Park is the largest nature reserve in Namibia and the eighth biggest in the world. Due to a proclamation in 2009 the national park arose from the single parks Skeleton Coast, Namib-Naukluft, the Fish River Canyon and others.
The national park is located at the whole 1.570 km of the Namibian Coast and reaches a breadth of 25 km at the closest and of 180 km at the widest point. It comprises an area of 10,754 million hectare and is attached to numerous formal and informal private nature reserves.
Despite its hostility to life there is a rich animal kingdom at the Skeleton Coast - from jackals to hyaenas and only a few left desert lions to elephants, giraffes and rhinos, gems bocks, kudus and zebras. A special phenomenon at the Skeleton Coast are the former fabulous desert elephant. They are called "fabulous" because natives told about having seen them even though scientists assured that elephants couldn't exist within these living conditions. It is indebted to an animal film of a popular couple that the contrary could be proved and the way of life of the desert elepants could be documented.

Damaraland is located in the northwest of Namibia south of Kaokoveld between the Etosha Pan and Erongo. Even if the name Damaraland is still used today, it reaches back to the times of the Homelands. Today Damaraland administratively belongs to the Kunene region.

It is only sparsely populated, penurious and wild. But during the drive through the region the visitor will discover amazing landscapes with bizarre mountains and wide and rocky plains. You will only infrequently see people or settlements. But there are wils rhinos and desert elephants, mainly in the western part of the area.

About 100 km west of the city Khorixas there is Damaraland's main attraction, the 2500 prehistoric rock engravenemtns of Twyfelfontein, which have been declared world cultural heritage by the UNESCO. Other highlights in Damaraland are the Ugab Terracces as well as the Vingerklip rocktop on the way from Khorixas to Outjo.
